The roots of your emotional responses

Learning how to take control of your emotions is tough.  It's even harder for people who have experienced severe trauma.  Everyone has some form of trauma, but some negative experiences can seem to be "stuck in the brain."

Past trauma can actually create changes in the brain.  Your brain stores your personal experiences, and how you respond to them.  It's like having a blueprint in your brain.  Your state of mind can be filled with faulty programming, even if you don't actually remember the experience.  The good news is that you can change emotional patterns, and your reactions to things.

Why we have Emotions?

Have you ever heard of the "fight or flight" response.  The instant something becomes a threat to us, our brain is wired to produce chemical reactions that help the body respond to that threat.  Usually, the response is a short-term experience to protect you from the immediate threat.  If the experience continues over a long period of time, it can create physical and mental health issues.

Emotions help us make decisions about what is going on in our environment, and the actions that we require to  protect ourselves or others.  Author Gael Lindenfield has a bestselling book called Emotional Confidence.  She explains some steps to manage your emotions.  Gael has courses and seminars available at www.gael-lindenfield.com.  Her book is a great read.

The  impact of emotional Abuse

I have personally studied this topic for a long time.  Many people struggle with the after math of emotional trauma, either from childhood, or adulthood. Unfortunately, sexual abuse is a common problem.  With any form of abuse the brain becomes stuck in faulty programming. The memories become almost permanent in your sub-conscious mind.  We may suppress these memories without realizing it.


Changing the Outcome

I don't believe drugs are the answer. Ignoring the emotions just makes you bitter.  Many people actually face Judgemental attitudes from others, and that makes things worse. There is some science that suggests that we can re-program the brain.  An new an innovative program is a system by Dr. Bradley Nelson.  It utilizes mind-body feedback to balance the brain and decrease physical symptoms. Cindy has trained with Dr. Nelson, and she is able to integrate these practices to  help you.

Many people that seek help for their emotional issues are told that they can "just let go of" things.  Most of those afflicted would disagree with that attitude.  Science has shown that negative experiences can cause serious health consequences if the problems aren't resolved.  

If you suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, you may be on medication, and that's good.  Remember though, there is a lot more to the healing process.  The good news is that there are natural methods to help your healing process.
